In LMP1, therefore overall, Porsche succeeded, despite an unfavorable aero choice, thanks to the rain which provoked an incident for one of its two rivals (read race summary). The incident caused an appearance by the safety car, and that allowed the two Porsche 919 Hybrids to catch up to the Toyota TS050 HYBRID in the lead and even overtake it thanks to the mechanics' speedy refuelings. It wouldn't be enough for the win, however, as Sébastien Buemi and his Toyota took back the lead shortly before the finish, leaving the two Porsches second and third places.
The third step on the podium was also claimed by one of the two new Porsche 911 RSRs in the LMGTE Pro class, the #91 driven by Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki (the second car was forced to retire after a fire erupted). Identical position for the previous generation Porsche 911 RSR of Dempsey-Proton Racing, but with a great deal of luck since the leaders made contact in the last lap. Only one of them managed to make it to the checkered flag, leaving room for Clearwater Racing's Ferrari and Dempsey-Proton Racing's Porsche.
