TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa | Kamui Kobayashi puts Toyota in pole position

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's #7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid secured pole position at this weekend's TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, third round of the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship. United Autosports and ORT by TF clinched the top spots in the LMP2 and LMGTE Am classes.

Initially, Antonio Giovinazzi clinched the pole at the wheel of Ferrari AF Corse's #51 499P in 02:00.777. However, the top spot was officially given to TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's #7 Toyota after the Italian driver incurred a penalty for exceeding track limits in turn 7. The #51 Ferrari slipped into P3 behind the #50 499P driven by Miguel Molina.

The qualifying session was disrupted when Brendon Hartley left the track in the #8 Toyota. The New Zealander was most likely tripped up by cold tyres in the Raidillon now that heating them with electric blankets is no longer authorised in the FIA WEC. Drivers have to take the time to warm up their tyres properly before embarking on a series of fast laps.

The #50 Ferrari 499P will start in third position ahead of Cadillac Racing's #2 and #3 Cadillacs. The top 4 are all within 0.3 seconds.

Porsche Penske Motorsport's Porsche 963s qualified 6th and 10th, and the Peugeot TotalEnergies team's Peugeot 9x8s are in the 9th and 11th spots.

A ferocious battle for P1 unfolded in the LMP2 class between Daniil Kvyat (Prema Racing #63 ORECA), Louis Delétraz (Team WRT #41 ORECA), Bent Viscaal (Prema Racing #9 ORECA), Gabriel Aubry (Vector Sport #10 ORECA) and Tom Blomqvist (United Autosports #23 ORECA). Blomqvist prevailed, scoring the #23 ORECA 07-Gibson's second pole position of the season. "We didn't do a fast lap during the free practice, so we weren't sure where we'd end up. I didn't really know how the session was turning out for us, and was pleasantly surprised to learned I'd clocked the fastest time. After our retirement at the 1000 Miles of Sebring, it's important for us to make it to the finish and earn as many points as possible."

3. Prema Racing | #63 ORECA 07-Gibson | Doriane Pin/Daniil Kvyat/Mirko Bortolotti | 02:06.506

LMGTE Am qualifying was also interrupted after Team Project 1's #56 Porsche 911 RSR-19 driven by P.J. Hyett left the track in the Raidillon. ORT by TF's #25 Aston Martin Vantage AMR dominated the session thanks to Ahmad Al Harty's time of 02:17.216. The Aston Martin beat the Iron Dames team's #85 Porsche 911 RSR-19 by nearly two seconds.
