The drivers were impatient to hit the track this afternoon for four hours of free practice, a session with no time influence on the rest of the week. After less than 15 minutes, Nicolas Lapierre (#9 Toyota) clocked a lap to beat in 3'22.00. To give you an idea of the level of that performance, remember back to 2012 when it would have earned the French driver pole position. Neel Jani (#1 Porsche) ended up improving on the time at the end of the session with a lap in 3'20.362.
In LMGTE Pro, some observators were concerned about the level of the Fords' competitiveness following their lackluster performances at Test Day. This evening, the American manufacturer proved it can be counted on when it clocked a performance similar to the fastest Ferrari.
The session was disrupted by the stunning impact for the #50 Corvette with the wall at the…Corvette turn. It was quite a scare for rookie driver Christian Philippon. Thankfully, it looked worse than it was, the Larbre Competition team's "Art Car" was repaired in less than two hours. As for ByKOLLES, the mechanics were able to change out their car's Nissan V6.
The eveing continues at 10:00 p.m. with a two-hour qualifying session. This time, the stakes will be a bit higher…
