The road will be closed until 29 October to ensure optimum conditions while the surface course is relaid. The result must meet the demands of motor racing and use specific to the cars competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The work involves a section of the Mulsanne Straight, from the Antares roundabout to the first chicane.
Produced from high-grade aggregate coated with bitumen specifically developed for racetracks, the top-quality asphalt offers mechanical characteristics equivalent to the Bugatti circuit. The asphalt must be applied at temperatures of over 5°C.
The current pavement was showing signs of fatigue and the asphalt covering the shoulders was damaged. The decision was therefore made to relay the surface course and the shoulders along this section of the circuit. This section was last resurfaced in 2011.
The rubble resulting from the milling of 18,000 m² of road surface will be taken away for use in aggregate for future asphalt. The current project involves relaying 1,700 tonnes of fresh asphalt. Once applied, the four timing loops in this section of the circuit will be fully restored. The Syndicat Mixte des 24 Heures du Mans is investing €245,000 (exclusive of VAT) in the resurfacing programme.
