- Also known as the Carrera 6, the 906 was the first Porsche at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to benefit from wind tunnel testing to fine-tune its aerodynamics. The model scored a stunning hat trick behind the one executed by Ford, with at the chequered flag fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh places and one class win.

- In addition to the three Ford Mk IIs and four Porsche 906s in the top 10, four Alpines crossed the finish line in ninth, 11th, 12th and 13th places.

- For its first appearance in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Porsche 911, driven by Jacques Dewes and Jean Kerguen, won its class and finished 14th overall.

- Future Indianapolis 500 winner (1969) and Formula 1 world champion (1978), Mario Andretti took his first start in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Ford, along with Belgian driver Lucien Bianchi. After becoming an American citizen in 1964, it was his first time returning to Europe since leaving Italy for the U.S. in 1955.

- Fifteenth at the 1966 24 Hours, the Mini Marcos of Claude Ballot-Léna and Jean-Louis Marnat was designed by British constructor Marcos and based on the Austin Mini.

- Teammates with Jacky Ickx, Jochen Neerpasch was a journalist competing in his third 24 Hours in 1966. He later became the CEO of BMW Motorsport before forming the Junior Team Mercedes who in 1991 sponsored Michael Schumacher's sole participation in the race. Twenty-two years old at the time, the future seven-time Formula 1 world champion finished fifth and clocked the fastest in-race lap.
