Hendrick Motorsport’s #24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was one of the most popular cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary field. Right from Test Day, the Garage 56 innovation entry was a clear crowd pleaser, with its aggressive look and the distinctive sound of its 5.8-litre 680 hp V8 engine – the one that powers the NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolets.
NASCAR Cup Series cars are built to turn left only, at over 300 kph, with no doors, wings or headlights. The 24 Hours of Le Mans entry therefore required a few changes to the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Jenson Button, Jimmie Johnson and Mike Rockenfeller qualified the Le Mans compliant Cup car ahead of the LMGTE Am field. They surely would have finished the race in the same spot had they not encountered transmission issues in the late stages. But that didn’t prevent them ranking 39th and hitting a top speed of 312.7 kph on the Mulsanne Straight – compared to 309.1 kph for the best LMGTE Am.
