24 Hours of Le Mans - 09:00 Roundup

It was a peaceful night here at the at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the morning is just as tranquil so far, with no change to the standings. Toyota is still running the perfect race out in front, as is Porsche in the GTE classes.

Ten cars have retired from the race. The latest car to have joined the Did Not Finish list is the #10 BR Engineering BR1 – Gibson. It went off track in the Porsche Curves, the car too badly damaged to be repaired. So, one down in the LMP1 class, dominated by the Toyota TS050 Hybrid.

The #7 and #8 Toyotas are gradually lengthening their lead over the Rebellion R13 - Gibsons. Both Japanese cars are in the same lap, 10 laps ahead of the Rebellion R13 - Gibson, with the #3 still ahead of the #1. The squirmish between the leading sister cars provided the entertainment: Fernando Alonso and Kazuki Nakajima in the #8 against José María López and Mike Conway in the #7. José María López lost ground under successive attacks from Alonso and Nakajima.

Despite incurring a penalty more than the sister car earlier in the race, the #8 has a slim lead.

In LMP2, G-Drive Racing, Panis Barthez Compétition and Signatech Alpine Matmut are still the top three. Jean-Eric Vergne in the G-Drive Racing Oreca 07 clocked some fast laps but the #23 Ligier JSP217-Gibson is putting up a fight. Timothé Buret, Julien Canal and Will Stevens have over a lap to make up but have been maintaining excellent pace. Will the consistency pay?

LMGTE Pro is still all about Porsche. The #92 Porsche 911 RSR is ahead of the #91 with the #68 Ford GT in third place in the same lap. Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia and Mike Rockenfeller maintain a discreet fourth place with the #63 Corvette C7.R. The American team has six hours - the equivalent of a World Endurance Championship race - to clinch a podium place.

BMW suffered during the night, both cars with mechanical issues affecting the dampers. Alexander Sims went off in the Porsche Curves with the #82 BMW M8 GTE, hitting hard. The damage was too great to be repaired and the car retired. The #81 sister car is still on track, and lies 15th in LMGTE Pro. It seems that the German manufacturer is using this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans to test its cars and collect as much data as possible to come back stronger next time.

In LMGTE Am, the #77 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR is still out in front. This morning, the main threat to the leader comes in the shape of the Keating Motorsports #85 Ferrari 488 GTE. The Italian is still in the same lap. The Le Mans night proved fatal for the #98 Aston Martin Vantage which retired after going off. Paul Dalla Lana will have to wait another year to add a Le Mans class win to his list of achievements.
