2024 24 Hours of Le Mans – Everything you need to know about the Hypercar category

Alpine, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Isotta Fraschini, Lamborghini, Peugeot, Porsche and Toyota are preparing to face off at the 92nd 24 Hours of Le Mans (12-16 June). Learn more about the cars, teams and their aspirations in this unprecedented Hypercar field.

Cadillac Racing & Whelen Cadillac Racing

#2 – Cadillac V-Series.R – Earl Bamber (NZL) – Alex Lynn (GBR) – Alex Palou (ESP)
#3 – Cadillac V-Series.R – Sébastien Bourdais (FRA) – Renger van der Zande (NLD) – Scott Dixon (NZL)
#311 – Cadillac V-Series.R – Luis Felipe Derani (BRA) – Jack Aitken (GBR) – Felipe Drugovich (BRA)

Cadillac has once again entered three V-Series.Rs as it did at the 2023 24 Hours. After an encouraging podium finish at the Centenary for the #2, the American marque is a real contender for the overall win this year with a fast, fine-tuned and reliable Hypercar. The team's season didn't get off to the best start in the FIA WEC, however, thanks to a disqualification at the Qatar 1812 km and a frightening incident at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Earl Bamber was deemed responsible by the stewards, giving the #2 a 5-spot penalty on the 24 Hours starting grid.

Porsche Penske Motorsport

#4 – Porsche 963 – Mathieu Jaminet (FRA) – Felipe Nasr (BRA) – Nick Tandy (GBR)
#5 – Porsche 963 – Matt Campbell (AUS) – Michael Christensen (DNK) – Frédéric Makowiecki (FRA)
#6 – Porsche 963 – Kévin Estre (FRA) – André Lotterer (DEU) – Laurens Vanthoor (BEL)

On the heels of a learning curve first season, and a performance at Le Mans considered disappointing, Porsche is back with a vengeance in 2024. The German constructor has improved its 963 and is seeking a 20th victory. The Porsche 963 has already won the Qatar 1812 km and Rolex 24 at Daytona in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this season, very promising results heading into the 24 Hours. Remember the Porsche 919 Hybrid won the race in its second outing in the LMP1 category. The carmaker will count on two private teams as well (Hertz Team JOTA et Proton Competition) for a total of six 963s at the start. Porsche will certainly have the advantage in numbers in the category.

#8 – Toyota GR010 Hybrid – Sébastien Buemi (CHE) – Brendon Hartley (NZL) – Ryo Hirakawa (JPN)

Despite disappointing results at last year's Centenary, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing finished 2023 with its head held high, proving the marque's determination to come back stronger in 2024. The Japanese team is looking to clinch a sixth win at Le Mans. This past winter, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing recruited Nyck de Vries, gave its GR010 Hybrid a stunning black livery and replaced Pascal Vasselon with David Floury as technical director. Thanks to the team's experience and proven Hypercar, it is considered a favourite to win the 92nd 24 Hours. The #7 won the 6 Hours of Imola, second round of the 2024 FIA WEC.

Isotta Fraschini

#11 – Isotta Fraschini Tipo 6 LMH-C – Carl Wattana Bennett (THA) – Jean-Karl Vernay (FRA) – Antonio Serravalle (CAN)

This prestigious Italian luxury carmaker is making its big return to competition this year with the Tipo 6 LMH-C hybrid Hypercar prepared Michelotto Engineering and still in the development phase. Late last year, Isotta Fraschini joined forces with Team Duqueine, a veteran of the LMP2 category. So, what is the marque's main goal facing off against the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, Peugeot and Toyota? Making it to the chequered flag will be considered a success. The driver line-up's leader, 2013 LMGTE Am winner Jean-Karl Vernay, will give Carl Wattana Bennett and Antonio Serravalle the benefit of his experience as the crew takes on the 92nd 24 Hours.

The German constructor intends to parlay the experience gained from its full season in the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship into positive results at Le Mans. The Hypercar has greatly improved across the races: the #20 finished sixth at the 6 Hours of Imola and the #15 finished 11th at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Lamborghini Iron Lynx

#19 – Lamborghini SC63 – Romain Grosjean (FRA) – Andrea Caldarelli (ITA) – Matteo Cairoli (ITA)
#63 – Lamborghini SC63 – Mirko Bortolotti (ITA) – Daniil Kvyat – Edoardo Mortara (ITA)

Lamborghini is hoping to cause a sensation with the arrival of its SC63 Hypercar at the 24 Hours. The car has carried out an extensive testing programme since August 2023. The #63 is taking part in the entire 2024 FIA WEC season and the #19 will come on board just for Le Mans. The latter will be driven by former F1 driver Romain Grosjean (one participation in the 24 Hours in 2010 at the wheel of Matech Competition's Ford GT). With its Hypercar still in the development phase, Lamborghini Iron Lynx is mainly looking to gain experience, so making it to the finish line at the 24 Hours will be considered an encouraging result for the future.

Alpine is returning to the Hypercar category with a new car: the A424. The French constructor hopes to add to its existing track record which includes the overall win at the 1978 24 Hours. To that end, Alpine will rely on the expertise of the Signatech team led by Philippe Sinault, and conducted a series of testing sessions ahead of the 2024 season. With three races under its belt, Alpine is currently fourth in the FIA Endurance Hypercar Manufacturers Championship. The #35 A424 finished ninth at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Alpine Endurance Team seems to have done everything it can to take on the 92nd 24 Hours and plans to seize every opportunity to achieve a good result.

Looking to defend and repeat this triumph, the Italian carmaker is sticking with the same driver line-ups as 2023. It will undoubtedly be an uphill battle facing off against Toyota, Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Peugeot, Alpine and Lamborghini, but Ferrari can count on the fast and reliable 499P.

The Peugeot 9X8 underwent radical modifications this past winter and is now equipped with a rear wing and boasts a differentiated tyre fit between the front and rear axles (29/24 cm). Peugeot Sport also redesigned 90% of the bodywork. The Hypercar made its new debut in competition at the 6 Hours of Imola and the #93 finished 10th at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Peugeot clearly intends to hold its own against the other top competitors in the Hypercar category thanks to the 2024 9X8.
