Currently, the two private teams, Rebellion Racing and Team ByKOLLES, that enter a prototype in the LM P1 class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) are equipped with an AER engine, but as of next year, the latter will have a competitor in the atmospheric V10 out of the Judd/AIM collaboration based on the Japanese company's preexisting engine.
According to the information shared by Engine Developments, this 5.5-liter engine will be more easily and cheaply maintained than a turbo engine, especially starting from an existing base that has already been made reliable. With a reasonable purchase price and maintenance costs under control, the two partners hope to attract new private outfits in the LM P1 class, which includes both constructors with cars equipped with a hybrid engine and private teams whose cars are equipped with a conventional engine.
Judd and AIM can count on past results to attract new clients since Judd claimed the second step on the podium at the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans with Pescarolo Sport, while AIM finished fourth in 2010 thanks to Oreca-Matmut.
