One of the outstanding features of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary race was the formidable battle fought by Toyota and Ferrari. The two manufacturers’ hypercars kept up an intense pace with the Toyota GR010 Hybrids attacking flat out from the start. The strategy is illustrated in the video below, recorded during a lap of the circuit on board the #7 machine shared by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López.
The head-to-head continued until midnight when the #7 Toyota was involved in an accident on approaching Tertre Rouge. Hit from behind, the Japanese hypercar came to a halt and Kobayashi’s attempts to restart proved to be in vain. A rare occurrence as the last retirement by a Toyota in the French endurance classic dated back to 2017!
The video below shows the Toyota firstly slipstreaming its rival along the Mulsanne Straight before overtaking brilliantly between Mulsanne Corner and Indianapolis.
