The Virginia International Raceway (VIR) is located in Alton (Virginia). Some big names in American motorsport were at the first race that was held at the circuit in 1957, including Carroll Shelby, future winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959, Bob Holbert, father of Al, triple winner in La Sarthe 1983-86-87. Closed during the 70s, the circuit was reborn in 1998, at the initiative of Harvey Siegel, real estate entrepreneur and vintage car racer.
After the surprise victory of the LM P2 prototype Honda HPD ARX-03b of Level 5 Motorsports in Baltimore , favourites, Muscle Milk Pickett Racing (Honda HPD ARX-03a) and Dyson Racing (Lola Mazda) are now separated by only five points in the team ranking of the teams and drivers in LM P1. In GT although Flying Lizard Motorsports were promising, it was ultimately the Falken Tire team who scored the first victory in 2012 for Porsche, with Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers. Porsche is now the wild card between BMW and Corvette for the title. The latter has for the moment has a comfortable lead of 24 points in the standings.
