Tokai University of Tokyo Japan will start of the race in the Asian Le Mans Series at Zhuhai in China, officials have announced at a press conference on 17th September held on the campus.
The car is based on a Courage-Oreca chassis and a YGK 3.998cc twin turbo V8 engine, but both have evolved. The first, as the bodywork was modified at the front and side panels to improve aerodynamics and reduce overall drag. The result is a gain of 10 kg compared to 2009. In addition to these technical changes, one notable difference since Asian Series race in Okayama is a completely restuctured team.
In 2008 and 2009, the University was using mechanics and engineering professionals (R & D Sport), this time it is students assisted by two or three technicians sent by YGK. Of the twenty-five students who will work at the circuit, seven are currently taking degree courses in 2nd year and have garnered the experience of two competitions (24 hours in 2008, in Okayama 2009).
Alumnus of University of Tokai Shogo Mitsuyama will share driving with Shigekazu Wakisaka, younger brother of Juichi Wakisaka, champion in GT500's 2009 SUPER GT series with Andre Lotterer.
The other important factor for Tokai is the arrival of a main sponsor: Nideck Corporation, a leading manufacturer of world small electric motors. "Without a major partner with us, it would have been impossible to participate in this race" explained the president of the university Jiro Takano. Since this agreement was forged, Tokai has done a four day test at Fuji Speedway. "If the race result is positive, we will increase the budget for sponsorship next year!" Revealed, enthusiastic, CEO of Nideck Shigemori Nagamori. Confidence in his team is justified when one considers that the Japanese competitor has received unprecedented media coverage at the 24 Hours.
Professor Hayashi and his students are very motivated, with many of projects: the team academic program already running for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 with this car, but with a hybrid engine designed by the Professor.
