Porsche is going all out with its liveries this year to celebrate its 70th anniversary. After two superbly decorated Porsche 911 RSRs in the LMGTE Pro class at the 2018 24 Hours, the German marque has brought back the livery given to the official cars at Le Mans in 1998 for its two 911 RSRs taking the start at Petit Le Mans this weekend.
Porsche is gearing up for the final round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season at Petit Le Mans in Georgia this coming weekend (11-13 October). In the spirit of the 2018 24 Hours where two 911 RSRs (LMGTE Pro) were decorated as nods to Porsche's history at Le Mans - the #92 "Pink Pig" in honor of the Porsche 917 of 1971, and the #91 sporting the colors of the 956 and 962 from the 1980s - the German marque is continuing the celebration.
This time the two cars will reflect the historic factory colors of 1998, with the two 911 RSRs representing the 911 GT1 winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year. At that edition, the two cars scored a one-two: the #26 shared by Laurent Aiello, Allan McNish and Stéphane Ortelli ahead of the #25 sister car driven by Bob Wollek, Jorg Müller and Uwe Alzen. Twenty years ago, an identical model started from pole position at Petit Le Mans for the race's first running. Of the 20 editions to date, Porsche has won a total of 23 victories. In 2015, the factory team even beat out the prototypes, taking home the overall win.
Look for the #911 Porsche 911 RSR shared by Nick Tandy, Patrick Pilet and Fred Mako to boast red flanks, with the #912 911 RSR of Laurens Vanthoor, Mathieu Jaminet and Earl Bamber going with yellow. Petit Le Mans is also the last race of the North American Endurance Cup (NAEC) season comprised of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta.
