The news broke the day the Extreme Speed Motorsports team scored its first pole position in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, becoming the first team with an LM P2 prototype to clinch the fastest qualifying time. Yet ESM entered an "old" car since the HPD (Honda Performance Development) ARX-03b has been around seven seasons, demonstrating the competitiveness of the Japanese manufacturer's vehicles.
The ESM structure will go from open cockpit to closed cockpit compliant with ACO regulations and can therefore compete in all series entitled "Le Mans". The bi-turbo 2.8 liter engine is based on that of the series cars.
Since 2010, Honda has won the LM P2 class at the 24 Horus of Le Mans twice thanks to Strakka Racing in 2010 and Starworks Motorsport in 2012, who was also crowned FIA World Endurance Champion that same year.
