The 'rule of three' in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012

The 80th running of the 24 hours of le mans offered three perfect « hat-tricks » for the winning trio, audi and the french larbre competition team.

The 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans offered three perfect « hat-tricks » for the winning trio, Audi and the French Larbre Competition team.

A double for a trio.  Winners in 2011 after starting from pole position, MarcelFässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer repeated the feat in 2012 and became the fourth team of three drivers to win at La Sarthe two years in a row.  They join Derek Bell, Hans Joachim Stuck and Al Holbert (winners in 1986-7), Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner (2006-7) and also Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro – the only trio to have carried off three consecutive victories (2000-1-2).

Another triple for Audi.  If the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro hybrids finished an historic 1-2, don’t forget the R18 ultra of Mike Rockenfeller, Oliver Jarvis and Marco Bonanomi who gave the German marque their fifth podium sweep at the 24 Hours, following those in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2010.

Larbre Competition, three wins with the Americans.  An expert in different GT categories seen at Le Mans over the last two decades, Jack Leconte’s team was already holder of the GTE Am title before taking a third consecutive victory at La Sarthe and all with an American car: after the Saleen S7-R in 2010, Larbre Competition scooped a second win in a row with a Corvette C6.R.
