The Red Arrow of Sbarro

A Batmobile cut out for endurance racing?

He made his debut at Le Mans in the '60s and now passes on his knowledge to students, who have created a prototype inspired by aviation.

Before inventing, Franco Sbarro has long practiced  mechanics in the garage of the Swiss Scuderia Filipinetti team, formerly known as a world enduranceracing team. Later, it launched reconditioned Ford GT40s as "Road" models and also was involved with the construction of replicas (Lola T70, Ferrari P4, Bugatti Royale, etc). In 1968, Chevrolet gave them the job of preparation of the two Corvette cars that they hoped would dominate the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, before both retiring one with a mechanical problem (a rear wheel bearing) and the other going off the road. One of them was engaged in the following five editions, a still unbeaten record for a single chassis (No. 194378S410300).

With nothing left to prove and wanting to enjoy life and pass on his knowledge to others, Franco Sbarro created his non-profit foundation in 1992, a special school where students, in addition to work study and design, are required to get their hands dirty and  build a model from A to Z, according to a precise specification, sometimes imposed by a manufacturer, like Seat in 2001.

The latest project, undertaken during 2012-2013 is in the style of this "Red Arrow" shape inspired by aviation, including the front that is reminiscent of the intake of a turbine engine. The mechanical parts are more classical with a 4 cylinder original Citroën engine located  centrally in a transverse position. As a result, this project marks the beginning of an adventure for the 30 students, who  aspire to follow the path of their teacher to Le Mans and elsewhere!

30 students towards a common goal: to produce a prototype from A to Z in less than 50 days.
With only 700 kg of weight to propel, the 156 horsepower of the Citroen DS3  is amply sufficient.
