In 2010 Porsche makes a reputation as a pioneer in alternative energies.
Officially, the German make did not intend to produce the 918 concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last March. However, more than 2000 potential clients contacted Porsche since then.
The technical specifications of the 918 are very attractive, and include a 500hp V8 engine derived from the RS Spyder (with two LMP2 wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours) and two electric engines providing a 218hp extra horsepower. One of these is coupled to the V8, and the other to the front wheels. This combination is part of the new ACO regulations for prototypes, and enables a temporary 4-wheel drive.
“Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts,” states Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. “We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”
Regarding performances, the top speed of the 918 Spyder will be of more than 320kph, with a 0-100kph acceleration announced in 3.2 seconds, and an expected fuel consumption of 3litres/100kms.
