Porsche could build a modern version of the 550 Spyder that participated regularly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the fifties.
The 90 examples of the 550 Spyder, that were constructed between 1953 and 1957, acquired credentials in racing (including Mille Migla and the Targa Florio). But it remains mostly remembered for being the car that James Dean was driving when he met his death on 30th September 1955.
It has since inspired the Porsche 356 Spyder and even the present Boxster. The modern version, which could be called the 551 Spyder, is not according to Matthias Müller (head of Porsche) a retro car and its price should be "attractive."
