The McLaren F1 GTR described by its “father”, Gordon Murray (video)

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The memory of the outsider that ran away with the trophy remains engraved in many hearts.

One man was the cornerstone of the car’s design — ingenious engineer Gordon Murray. The South African spent many years with Brabham before moving on to McLaren Formula One where he rubbed shoulders with Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.

In 1990 he was named technical director of McLaren Automotive, the branch responsible for designing exclusive cars. Under Murray’s guidance, McLaren produced the car that won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours with Yannick Dalmas, JJ Lehto and Masanori Sekiya.

In this, the fifth episode in the Le Mans Memories saga, Murray describes how he came to design a Le Mans winner. The five McLaren F1 GTRs that ran the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995 will be back this year for a special anniversary parade.
