The flag has gone down to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans!

At 3pm today, Hollywood star Brad Pitt lowered the flag to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

And they’re off! The 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016, the third round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) is now underway! The 60 competitors were forced to set off behind the safety car on a very wet track.

This means that the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid for Porsche Team was in the lead at the end of the first lap, in front of the #1 Porsche 919 Hybrid and the #6 Toyota TS050.

The CLM P1 ByKolles Racing Team driven by trio Trummer/Webb/Kaffer started its race from the pit lane after the Austrian team’s prototype suffered an oil leak.

A few minutes earlier, the crowds in the grandstands along the Pit Straight had joined in singing the French national anthem. Personalities in attendance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans include Slovakian model and actress, Adriana Karembeu, Jackie Chan, Chinese actor and producer, and British actor Jason Statham.

Another highlight in the minutes leading up to the start of the race was the flyover by the Patrouille de France air force display team.
