Born on 17 September 1929, Sir Stirling Moss belonged to a family very fond of and involved in auto racing, naming his parents and sister, and eventually made a name for himself on the track at countless renowned circuits. He demonstrated talent, intelligence, enthusiasm and style in the many disciplines he took on.
A driver in Formula 1, endurance, rally and hill climbs among others, he also made his mark at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He took the start in 10 runnings, and even participated in the vintage race in 1955, a testament to his love for all things competition and cars.
Moss won 16 F1 Grand Prix and claimed the top step on the podium at the Nürburgring, the RAC Tourist Trophy, Sebring and the Mille Miglia. Throughout his career, he represented many of the great manufacturers and went up against a long list of top drivers.
Automobile Club de l’Ouest President Pierre Fillon: "It is with deep sadness we have learned of the death of Sir Stirling Moss. The man and the driver both brought so much to auto racing, all competitions considered, a true motorsport legend. Some have called him the embodiment of motorsport, mister auto racing, and he certainly was one of its greatest ambassadors.
He took the start 10 times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including in 1955 with Mercedes, finishing second twice, with Jaguar and Aston Martin. The ACO will forever remember the man and the driver, who, relatively recently, graced the Le Mans circuit for vintage races with the same level of enthusiasm and commitment as always.
On behalf of the Automobile Club de L’Ouest, I extend my warmest, heartfelt thoughts to his wife, family and loved ones."
