A sprint of more than 3,000 miles – that’s the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a nutshell. A unique race that calls on competitors to achieve a subtle balance between performance and reliability – two notions that are inversely proportional in most top-level sports.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans are the highlight of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) calendar that includes eight other rounds, all contested over six hours. The championship draws its strength from the diversity of the cars that do battle on the track. There are two main categories: Prototypes (LM P) and Grand Tourers (LM GTE). The first category brings together cars that have been specifically developed for racing. The second consists of sports cars marketed for on-road use but modified for competition. The 2016 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is already shaping up to make history with no fewer than 60 cars on the starting grid!
