The 1957 Le Mans official factory Ferrari 335 at Rétromobile auction

Ferrari 335S chassis 0674 is in French auction house Artcurial

Fitted with a Scaglietti body and 3.8 l engine, the car first went by the name of 315S. Its maiden race came at the 12 Hours of Sebring where it was driven by Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant and finished sixth. After Sebring, Ferrari lined up four cars in the Mille Miglia. That race turned out to be chassis 0674’s finest achievement with Wolfgang von Trips taking the runner-up spot behind Piero Taruffi in one of the Scuderia’s other cars.

Before the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hours, with the car’s engine capacity increased to 4023 cm³, the 315S was renamed 335S. It raced under #7 at Le Mans but mechanical problems in the fifth hour brought its race to a premature end.

In 1958, the Ferrari 335S was sold to Luigi Chinetti, boss of the renowned North American Racing Team (NART). He entered it in various American races before selling it on to a Pennsylvanian architect. Well-known collector Pierre Bardinon brought it back to France in 1970 to add to his 50-strong Ferrari collection, including four of the nine winners of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The 335S on sale is in excellent working condition and Artcurial expects it to beat its previous record and fetch €28-32 million (US$30-34 million).
Rétromobile will run from 3 to 7 February 2016 at the Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles in Paris.
