BMW came very close to another feat after winning the Nürburgring 24 Hours, but Porsche scored a 1-2 with BMS Scuderia Italia ahead of Imsa Performance Matmut.
Romain Dumas (winner – Porsche 997): “We were not the favourites because the Ferraris and BMWs were much more performing than us. But the performance is one thing, and the distance definitely something else. In endurance racing, you build up a victory by being consistent and avoiding problems. In a certain way, we got even with BMW who beat us after Porsche dominated the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This is a special race for me because my endurance career started when I won the Spa 24 Hours with Porsche in 2003. When Penske stopped its endurance racing programme earlier this year, I was far from thinking I would win the Le Mans and Spa 24 Hours!”
Raymond Narac (2nd – Porsche 997): “We changed the brake pads that cost us two laps, but not changing them could have been detrimental to us. You cannot predict this kind of thing, it happens regularly in endurance racing, you never know. My team mates made no mistakes, and had no issue with the car, which is the secret of success in this difficult race, which suffered many accidents and runoffs. This is a good season for the team after our achievements at Dubai and Le Mans.”
Dirk Werner (3rd – BMW M3): “The disappointment is huge. I had already slowed down, so as not to take any risks and bring us home safely in first place, when the track rod suddenly broke and landed me in the crash barriers. I made it back into the pits, but the victory was gone. The car was really class, particularly in dry conditions. We really had a great race – until the last 40 minutes.”
