This past Monday, 27 amateur journalists from the Sainte-Croix school in Le Mans added to their media CVs thanks to Ouest France and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest. After visiting the 24 Hours circuit and then the Ouest-France headquarters, where they met Julien Canal, the CM2 students focused on their next more serious task: a scheduled telephone interview with 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Sébastien Buemi. As soon as last year's teammate with Fernando Alonso and Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel of the #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid appeared on the video call screen, you could hear a pin drop in the room. Though some students only knew him by name, others more in the know were spellbound. Sébastien Buemi has to his credit seven participations in the 24 Hours, including four podium finishes and victory. “I love the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit. It's an old school track with a true circuit, the Bugatti, and the road. It's quite long but very enjoyable. I never get tired of it. Of all my wins, it's my favorite because of the complexity involved."
Impressed by the international track record of the Swiss driver who runs in various disciplines, the Sainte-Croix students continued with their inquiries: ''How big is the 24 Hours of Le Mans trophy? What does it feel like to be on the podium? Have you ever been involved in an accident? Do you like day or night driving better?"' Paul, a true 24 Hours of Le Mans fan, asked one of the best questions: "How did you pull off the win last year?'' "Very good question," answered Buemi. "I'd say the experience we've amassed over the years. And the caliber of my team and of course the car. But our main asset is our level of experience," underscored Buemi, who with his teammates leads the drivers world championship standings.
After the interview, the CM2 students of the Sainte-Croix school headed to a karting session at the famous Alain Prost circuit, and by all accounts had the time of their lives: “I loved it, it was so much fun!", "I'm going to come back with my dad." "I was going 38 km/h!”
