The safety cars are those that take the track to neutralize the race upon the request of race direction. There are three at different spots on the circuit.
These cars are in charge of limiting the competitors' speed on the track. A moderate speed there but one that is fast for typical drivers!
At the wheel of the Audi R8s are professional driver monitors who are experts in trajectories, circuit racing and who know how to dismiss the pressure brought on by competitors on their heels.
Cyril Denis, safety car driver: "We are recruited by the ACO as safety car drivers in function of our driving abilities. Then we participate as volunteers in different ways according to the ACO's needs and our availability. We operate in pairs, there is always a driver and a coordinator permanently linked to race direction. We must stay in the car so as to always be ready to leave as quickly as possible and take turns every four hours. The hope is we don't have to go because that would mean everything is going well on the track. And then when we do go out, we have the pleasure of driving these superb Audi R8s. It's a unique pleasure since it results from a problem on the track. But starting from the moment we are asked to intervene, we know it's for the safety level of the race, so we do the best work we can. Then there's the satisfaction to have participated in the organization and to have worked for the safety of the drivers."
