Rolex 24 at Daytona – Meyer Shank Racing wins despite challenges

The #60 Acura ARX-05 fielded by Meyer Shank Racing won the 60th Rolex 24 at Daytona, first round of the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The car did, however, experience its fair share of problems.

Helio Castroneves kept Meyer Shank Racing's #60 Acura ARX-05 in the lead of the Rolex 24 at Daytona for the final 30 minutes, carrying the outfit  and teammates Tom Blomqvist, Oliver Jarvis and Simon Pagenaud to victory. The time gap with the second-place finisher, the defending winner #10 Acura, was 3.028 seconds. As he did for his four wins at the Indianapolis 500, Castroneves celebrated by climbing a protecting barrier. Despite a flat tire early in the race, an engine cover change and a penalty for excessive speed in pit lane, the #60 Acura's speed made the difference at the Floridian circuit. After the 2019 Indy 500, French driver Pagenaud has now won a second legendary auto race.

Meyer Shank Racing's victory ended Wayne Taylor Racing's hopes of winning the race for a fourth time in a row, which would have set a record. The #5 Cadillac DPi fielded by Whelen Engineering Racing and driven by Tristan Vautier, Richard Westbrook, Loïc Duval and Ben Keating rounded out the podium 4.4 seconds from the winners.

After a very impressive showing, DragonSpeed USA's #81 ORECA 07 won the LMP2 class seven seconds ahead of Racing Team Nederland's #29 ORECA. Delayed early in the race due to multiple penalities for excessive speed in pit lane, drivers Éric Lux, Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward and Devlin DeFrancesco made up time and reached the top step on the class podium. The Tower Motorsports team's #8 ORECA entrusted to John Farano, Louis Delétraz, Rui Pinto, and Andrade and Ferdinand Habsburg finished third.

The #74 Ligier JS P320 entered by Riley Motorsports claimed the top step on the LMP3 podium, and the #9 Porsche 911 GT3R of Pfaff Motorsports snatched the win in the final minutes in GTD Pro. Lastly, the Wright Motorsports team's #16 Porsche 911 GT3R triumphed in the GTD class.
