Proton Competition to run the Porsche 963 in FIA WEC and IMSA

The LMGTE Am powerhouse is preparing a Hypercar entry as a Porsche customer team.

Proton Competition is about to turn a new leaf. The German outfit headed by Michael and Christian Ried is stepping up to the Hypercar class with two Porsche 963s – one in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the other in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The team will continue to field a GT entry with more details on this programme and the drivers to come.

“This signals the start of a new era for us,” says Christian Ried. “After over a quarter of century of GT success, we’re looking forward to taking up a new challenge at the highest level of endurance with Porsche and to fighting for outright wins in the two most important championships.”

Proton Competition was founded by Gerold Ried in 1996 and chalked up several race wins and various GT championship titles with Porsche. Two 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins (GT2 in 2010 and GTE Am in 2018) feature among the team’s greatest achievements. Proton Competition also took the class team title in the 2009 and 2010 Le Mans Series, the 2010 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and, more recently, the European Le Mans Series (2018, 2020 and 2022).

In 2023, the Porsche 963 contingent will therefore line up as follows:

  • FIA WEC: two cars for Porsche Penske Motorsport, one for JOTA and one for Proton Competition
  • IMSA: two cars for Porsche Penske Motorsport, one for JDC Motorsports and one for Proton Competition
