This July was marked by the announcement of the return of Porsche to first rank prototypes with a new LM P1 in 2014. The opportunity to revisit the history of the prototypes designed by the Stuttgart manufacturer for the Sarthe classic. After the prestigious line of 917, 936, 956 and 962, which combines eleven wins at Le Mans from 1970 to 1987, the RS Spyder is the first first Prsche prototype of the 21st century.
At the end of the 2005 season, the Porsche RS Spyder made its first appearance in the United States, in the American Le Mans Series. An LM P2, but still the return of a Porsche prototype to the event. In addition, Porsche entrusted the car to Roger Penske, previously a partner with the 917/10 and 917/30 in CanAm in 1972 and 1973. The RS Spyder quickly collected successes in the ALMS, finally beating Audi overall in the 12 Hours of Sebring 2008 with Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Emmanuel Collard.
That same year, like the 962 in the mid 80's, the Porsche RS Spyder crossed the Atlantic to race in the Le Mans Series and Le Mans 24 Hours. Two appearances in La Sarthe resulted in victories in LM P2, in 2008, Verstappen / Bleekemolen / Van Merksteijn (Van Merksteijn Motorsport), and in 2009 with Collard / Elgaard / Poulsen (Team Essex), accompanied in both cases tenth place overall. Again, Porsche showed its ambitions. First, quickly becoming the benchmark in its class. Then, lifting the level of performance and reliability in LM P2. And finally, most importantly, not having forgotten how to build a prototype that wins ... how could it be otherwise when it comes to Porsche, who hold the record for victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours? We look forward to 2014...
