This is the challenge of the moment! Last April, the Ferrari 599XX set the fastest lap for a street car on on the Nürburgring, but this record has just been broken on the legendary Eifel circuit.
With its new model, Pagani challenged Ferrari: like the 599XX, the Zonda R is an extreme and very exclusive car, with only 15 examples produced at the price of 1.4 million euros. Fitted with a 739hp Mercedes engine, it can reach the top speed of 373kph and the 0-100kph acceleration in only 3 seconds. On the terrible Nordschleife, it improved the Ferrari’s lap record by 11 seconds, setting a time of 6:47.15.
This is very far from the record set by Stefan Bellof with the Porsche 956 (a 4-time Le Mans winning car) with a 6:11. Another fact to be noted is that the Pagani Zonda entered the 24 Hours only once: in 2003, the car retired after one hour of race, due to a gearbox failure.
