TYRES ...
There have been a surprising number of punctures this year so we spoke to Dunlop about it. They tell us that life has been tough for tyres so far in the race because there has been a lot of debris on the track made up of shards of carbon fibre as well as a fair bit of gravel. The long safety car periods have meant that the tyres are running well below their correct pressures and temperatures so can be vulnerable until they are back up to the correct temperature and pressure. It is a big operation even looking after the 17 cars that run on Dunlop tyres. They have brought down over 4,500 tyres. To move this lot down from the UK they have ten 40’ trailers stacked with a variety of sizes and compounds of tyres. To keep the tyre fitting service up and running non stop for 24hrs they have 36 people at the circuit. Just imagine the size of the Michelin operation, they are looking after 38 cars.
