On the 1st of December in Weybridge (United Kingdom), the Austin Healey 100 S involved in the disaster of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955 reached the highest bid of Bonhams last sale in 2011.
Estimated at 500,000 pounds (583,000 euros), the Austin Healey went for 843,000 pounds (about 982,000 euros). The car was presented unrestored, by the seller, who acquired it in 1969. Following the terrible accident of June 11, 1955, it was impounded by the French for eighteen months and then returned to the Donald Healey Motor Company. Restored, it reappeared in competition in the late 50's and early 60's in the hands of private drivers. Prior to the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955, it had run in La Sarthe in 1953. It also competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring, finishing third, and the Carrera Panamericana, marathon road that ran from Texas to southern Mexico.
The next two of Bonhams car sales will take place in Britain during the first half of 2012: March 3 at Oxford and in London on April 23.
