The Lamborghini Iron Lynx driver line-ups are now complete for the SC63’s début season in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Iron Lynx have finalised their driver rosters for the 2024 FIA WEC and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns. The firm from Sant’Agata Bolognese has recruited two experienced GT drivers for their works teams: 36-year old Edoardo Mortara and Matteo Cairoli (27).
After getting to know the SC63 at Jerez (Spain) in September, they recently took part in two days of testing at the Circuit Of The Americas in Texas.
Mortara will team up with Mirko Bortolotti and Daniil Kvyat in the FIA WEC while Cairoli will race in four rounds of the IMSA Endurance Cup with Andrea Caldarelli and Romain Grosjean. Both line-ups will then compete in the 92nd 24 Hours of Le Mans (12-16 June 2024), subject to invitation from the Selection Committee.
"We are satisfied with the maturity of the project"
Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer
Lamborghini Head of Motorsport, Giorgio Sanna said: “We are thrilled to welcome Edoardo and Matteo into our Lamborghini Squadra Corse family. Both drivers have a lot of experience and not only bring with them impressive speed and professionalism to the project in FIA WEC and IMSA, but also the opportunity to use them strategically in some of the biggest GT3 races and championships.”
Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer, added: “The Austin test concludes the development phase of the SC63 ahead of the racing début in Qatar. Overall, we are satisfied with the maturity of the project so far, which was demonstrated at the Daytona test where we set the fastest time on the first day. Of course, there is still a lot of work behind the scenes to be done before Qatar. I also want to take this opportunity to welcome Edoardo and Matteo, who complete our 2024 driver line-up, to the Lamborghini Squadra Corse family.”
About Edoardo Mortara
The Swiss racing driver also has French and Italian nationality. He brings more than a decade of experience to the Lamborghini Iron Lynx team. Mortara is dubbed “Mr Macau” and is reputed to be one of the world’s top urban circuit drivers, amassing ten wins (seven overall victories and three qualifying races) at the famous Guia Circuit. Mortara was crowned Formula 3 Euro Series champion in 2010 ahead of drivers of the calibre of Marco Wittmann, Valterri Bottas and Alexander Sims. More recently, he has forged a successful career in the FIA Formula E championship, finishing second and third in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons respectively with Venturi Racing.
Mortara said: “I am super happy to be joining Lamborghini Squadra Corse, which is allowing me this incredible opportunity to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the World Endurance Championship, both of which I have wanted to take part in for a long time. It is a very proud moment for me, and I hope we can achieve some good results next season.”
Matteo Cairoli, already a seasoned endurance campaigner
Originally from Como in northern Italy, Cairoli had driven exclusively for Porsche since leaving Formula racing in 2014. He won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2021. Despite his young age (27), the Italian has raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans seven times with his best result the fourth place in the LMGTE Am class achieved in 2020 with Team Project 1. He already has several FIA WEC and European Le Mans Series wins under his belt.
During the COTA test, Cairoli said: “First of all, I am really excited to be here in Austin for my second proper outing with the car, and I want to thank Lamborghini Squadra Corse and the Iron Lynx family for this amazing opportunity. I am ready to give the best of myself next year. Clearly, it’s a dream I have been chasing for a long time and to do it with an Italian brand as an Italian driver has given me even more motivation. The aim is to learn as much as possible about the car for next year, but I am already pumped for the start of the season.”
