It is with great sadness that we hear that Martin Bartek, great architect of Ford's return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year, died on Monday, April 4 at the age of 44 years.
Born in Bratislava in former Czechoslovakia, Swiss national Martin Bartek was only two years old in 1969 when the Ford GT won the last of its four victories at Le Mans. As a teenager, he became one of the best swimmers in Switzerland and was very close to qualification for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Ten years later, the former top athlete - turned into a businessman - discovered the race track ... A revelation.
He created Matech Competition in 2006, to give a sporting career to the descendant of the Ford GT 40. In 2010, three Ford GTs of Matech took the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the duo-Grosjean Mutsch were victorious twice in the FIA GT championship.
Martin Bartek dreamed of returning to Le Mans with a Ford GT adapted to the new category GTE ... Unfortunately fate did not allow him the opportunity.
