As the final round of the WEC got underway, several well-known Le Mans drivers did their bit to promote endurance racing. Nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, Nico Hülkenberg, Alex Buncombe and Sir Chris Hoy all proved that sports car drivers are a force to be reckoned with.
The Nations Cup on the first day saw victory for BTCC champion Jason Plato and BMW factory driver Andy Priaulx, who has competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours twice. The British pair won the final from the Germans: four-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel and Nico Hülkenberg, Force India Formula One driver and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche this year.
In the semi-final, Vettel and Hülkenberg beat Petter Solberg, Norwegian Rally and Rally Cross Champion and Mr Le Mans, aka Tom Kristensen, who won the cup last year. The All Star team composed of Formula One Lotus driver Romain Grosjean and recently crowned ELMS champion Chris Hoy didn’t make it to the semis. However, the former Olympic cyclist made a superb show of dexterity to win the first edition of the Skills Challenge.
Kristensen found some consolation the following day, reaching the final of the individual event for the fourth time, eliminating Nissan factory driver Alex Buncombe on the way. In the semi-final, Hülkenberg was beaten by teammate Sebastien Vettel who went on to claim victory.
