IMSA - The race in Long Beach, California

While the World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series stage their season-openers at Silverstone, the seaside town of Long Beach in California is gearing up to host the third round in the 2016 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The narrow streets of Long Beach can only accommodate three of the four classes in the championship: Protoype, Prototype Challenge and GTLM but the resort will also be the venue for an IndyCar Series race the same weekend.

It promises to be a hotly-contested twenty-five car race although Extreme Speed Motorsport, winners of the first two rounds of the championship, the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, are not among the competitors. The team competes in the North American Endurance Cup which only includes the four long races of the season.

However, Corvette Racing will be aiming for a third class win in GTLM following Daytona and Sebring and are sure to give last year’s winners BMW a run for their money.

The two-day event includes two free practice sessions and a 15-minute qualification session on Friday 16 April. The short 1-hour-40-minute race sets off at 16:05 local time (PDT) on Saturday 17 April.
