Hour 9: Nico Hülkenberg (Porsche) takes the lead, Mark Webber receives a penalty

At 11:05 p.m., the safety car came in, but a slow zone remained around Mulsanne Corner, which implied restrictions. Mark Webber, in the No. 17 Porsche 919 Hybrid, received a one minute stop & go penalty for overtaking under yellow.

The penalty knocks Mark Webber off the provisional podium and although a Porsche is still leading thanks to the No. 19 driven by Nico Hülkenberg, two Audis are now second and third, No. 8 R18 e-tron quattro ahead of No. 7 with three-time Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler. Both Toyotas are still 7th and 8th and the three Nissans are still running.

The LM P2 class settled into a rhythm and there is no change despite the safety car period. Both brand new Orecas 05 maintain their lead, No. 47 of Chinese team KCMG ahead of French team Thiriet by TDS Racing. The Russian G-Drive Racing still holds third.

Drama in the LM GTE Pro class with the No. 97 Aston Martin, second, stopped before Mulsanne corner with smoke coming out of the Vantage V8. Its sister car No.99 now tops the time sheets with polesitter Richie Stanaway behind the wheel, followed by No. 64 Corvette and No. 91 Porsche, in the class top three for the first time.

The safety car didn't change the classification in the LM GTE Am class, the No. 98 Aston Martin still ahead of both No. 83 and No. 72 Ferraris and of No. 77 Porsche of Patrick Dempsey.
