Amelia Island is one of the two most important gatherings of vintage cars in the U.S., the other being Monterey in California. As at Monterey, several auction houses put collection cars on the block during the event, but this year that will not include any that has taken the start at Le Mans.
Tribute will still be paid to the 24 Hours in a manner of speaking since the Concours d’Élégance (program) guest of honour is Hans-Joachim Stuck, who has claimed a podium finish no less than seven times at Le Mans including two consecutive wins in 1986 and 1987 with Porsche. It was also with the German manufacturer that "Strietzel" (the name of a German and Austrian cake) won twice at the 12 Hours of Sebring, at which he served as Grand Marshal last year, after having scored a first victory in 1975 with BMW.
