The new Ford GT race car will compete in full seasons of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in 2016. Both efforts will be operated by respected American team Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS). The two squads will combine for the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans for a massive four-car effort in the LM GTE Pro category.
Competing in dual championships and taking on Le Mans will require two bases of operation.
“I think it would be a little too rambunctious to come over here with a strictly American team, so we have some people with quite a bit of experience here (Le Mans),” Chip Ganassi said. “We’ll have two bases. One in probably the UK and one in the States.”
The car will make its race debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2016.
“We want to come to Le Mans and be at the front straight away,” Ganassi said. “If I didn’t think we could win I wouldn’t have undertaken the program.”
Partners with Ford on this project include: Multimatic Motorsports, Roush Yates Engines, Castrol, Michelin, Forza Motorsport, Sparco, and Brembo. The race car has already begun extensive testing within Ford and Multimatic, with CGRFS providing input into the development. Roush Yates is supporting development of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6.
