In modern motorsport one of the most important men in the team is the aerodynamicist. The airflow over and around the car is crucial since it creates down-force which pushes the car down onto the track.
Teams spend many hours and thousands of Euros on wind-tunnel research and development. While the car is travelling in the right direction everything works fine but if it spins or gets sideways then the wings and spoilers can actually help to launch the car into the air. All the rules change and the result can be a serious accident.
This year a regulation has been introduced that requires all the new LMP1 cars to have a ‘vertical aerodynamic device (shark’s fin) on the engine covers’. Last year’s models, like the Rebellion Racing Lola B 10/60 do not have to have one. The idea is to keep the car more stable during a spin and to reduce the risk of it getting airborne. They are not required in LMP2.
