Fans from all over the world seized the opportunity to question the iconic Spanish driver. The two-time Formula One world champion, two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and current FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Champion revealed a few secrets.
Like many racing drivers, Alonso had always dreamed of winning Le Mans. Having won twice in two attempts, he has a rare 100% success rate: “That was beyond my wildest dreams! I was able to win Le Mans twice because the race was included twice in the same FIA WEC season and I was part of the same incredible team in an amazing car.
"I loved driving at night. In fact I preferred it. I don’t know why. At Le Mans after dark, you’re on your own. There are a few sections that are completely unlit. There’s just the headlights. It’s different to the 24 Hours of Daytona. There’s less daylight at Daytona as it takes place in winter rather than mid-summer, but the whole circuit is floodlit."
"Yes, I would like to do Le Mans again. And win a third time. In the new category. I’m keeping an eye on Le Mans Hypercar."
"The ACO and IMSA are doing good stuff with the LMDh. Constructors will be able to enter the same car all over: in Europe, America, Asia..."
"Endurance racing introduced me to teamwork as a driver. I enjoyed the feeling of togetherness. Improvement comes from learning from others. Endurance racing is about sharing."
"If Valentino Rossi wants to do Le Mans, I’d say ‘Do it’! It’s a life-changer."
"The qualifying sessions are always exciting to watch. The spot on the starting grid isn’t key in a long race like Le Mans, but everyone enjoys seeing drivers go all-out to clock a good time. So the new Hyperpole system will make a great show. It will be excellent spectator entertainment."
