The unique minimalist look of the Seven was born in 1957 in the imagination of Colin Chapman, one of the greatest "brains" in the history of Formula 1, who was a formerly an aeronautical engineer and founded Lotus. He gave birth to a small open top car with tubular chassis and front engine, all-aluminum bodywork, rollbar, front wings, headlights like the Citroën 2 CV, two seats and no more. It featured in the opening credits of the first episode of the television series "The Prisoner" (1967) driven by actor Patrick McGoohan.
The Seven was manufactured by Lotus for fifteen years, from 1957 to 1972. From 1959, Caterham was the distributor in Britain, before acquiring the manufacturing rights and has continued from 1972 until today. The Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes recently bought Caterham, and gave the name to his Formula 1 team, before partnering with Renault for the rebirth of the 'Alpine'. The Lotus Seven is regularly seen at Le Mans during LMstory, in a one make race. The 2013 edition of the even for road and competition cars, which takes place on the Bugatti circuit every two years, alternating with Le Mans Classic will take place on 6 and 7 July 2013.
