Carlos Tavares brings the Peugeot 908 back to the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Official race starter Carlos Tavares, Chairman of the Groupe PSA Managing Board, took a Peugeot 908 out for a lap of the full circuit ahead of the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Peugeot Sport recently unveiled its new identity with a new logo and new colours. The emblematic Peugeot lion in its lair overlooking the Dunlop Chicane gives warning of the forthcoming battle, undoubtedly sending shivers down its future rivals’ spines. One day after outlining the marque's plans to return to endurance and presenting the first impressions of the new Hypercar, Peugeot Sport took to the Le Mans racetrack.

Carlos Tavares insisted on celebrating the announcement of Peugeot Sport’s return to endurance himself. The Chairman of Groupe PSA took the wheel of a 908 – the marque’s iconic model that outfought Audi in 2009 to claim victory. This was the latest of the French manufacturer’s three Le Mans triumphs after back-to-back wins for the Peugeot 905 in 1992 and ’93. The model taken for a spin today by the regular racer – Tavares competes in Le Mans Classic – was chassis 908-09. This was the very car that won the 12 Hours of Sebring and at Petit Le Mans in 2010.

Peugeot Sport pointed out that “this drive is also a way of showing our gratitude to the motorsport enthusiasts and viewers, but also to the volunteers, organisers and teams who made this 2020 race possible.” Seeing a Peugeot 908 back at the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans is a remarkable event. After completing this swift lap of the track, Carlos Tavares will switch from driver to official starter of the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans where he will unleash the 59 entries at 14:30.
