Birthday return for Risi Competizione

A birthday return for Risi Competizione in American Le Mans Series (ALMS) winter testing which took place from the 5th to 8th of February at Sebring (Florida), saw the return to the track of Risi Competizione, one of the leading Ferrari teams of the past fifteen years, which has three class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 2013, the team founded by Giuseppe Risi, proprietor of Ferrari of Houston, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. Originally called Doyle-Risi, it started with a bang in 1998 with two major successes for the Ferrari 333 SP prototype. Firstly eighth place overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Wayne Taylor, Eric van de Poele and Fermin Velez, after a race dominated by the Porsche 911 GT1 and Toyota GT-One. A few months later, this time with French driver Emmanuel Collard, Taylor and van de Poele won the inaugural Petit Le Mans (1000 miles or ten hours of maximum duration). This race was the first act in the revival of endurance racing that culminated fourteen years later, in the creation of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Giuseppe Risi quickly became one of the most active and successful characters of that period. The competitiveness of the team, renamed Risi Competizione in 2001, earned him the support of Ferrari Corse Clienti, Ferrari's customer competition department, and the results were immediate: Two consecutive titles for the F430 GT in ALMS (2006 and 2007) and two wins in a row in what was then the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2008 and 2009). The Sicilian emigrated to the United States in 1979, globetrotter Francophile and polyglot (he started in the sport in Spain in the mid 70s), Giuseppe Risi (as a spectator) even crossed paths with Steve McQueen who asked him the time in the paddock of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1970! Since he joined the pantheon of other great Ferrari team owners as Luigi Chinetti (North American Racing Team), Jacques Swaters (Ecurie Francorchamps), Ronnie Hoare (Maranello Concessionaires), Charles Pozzi (Pozzi Ferrari SA France) , Gianpiero Moretti (initiator of the Ferrari 333 SP) and Jean-Michel Bouresche (JMB Racing), paving a way for success in the field of AF Corse in the FIA World Endurance Championship. After a sabbatical in 2012, Risi Competizione did not take long to get back in the groove. Drivers Olivier Beretta and Matteo Malucelli left ALMS winter testing with the fastest time in the GT class. Enough to give confidence for the season opener, the 12 Hours of Sebring on the 16th March, and perhaps a return to Le Mans in the near future.
