Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup - Ligier and Ginetta share honours

The second round of the Asians Le Mans Sprint Cup took place at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit last weekend. Ligier dominated the first race while Ginetta triumphed in the second.

The three rounds (two races per event) of the Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup are all held at Sepang. Unlike the 24 Hours of Le Mans and its four classes, there are only three categories in the Asian championship: LM P3, CN and GTCup.

In LM P3, the Ligier JS P3 fielded by DC Racing and driven single-handedly by James Winslow took the win in the first race. However, Winslow narrowly missed out on the podium coming fourth in the second race, after a one-minute stop & go penalty for taking a short-cut into the pits when he lost a tyre. Victory went to the Ginetta run by PRT Racing with Charlie Robertson and Ate de Jong at the wheel. It had led the race from start to finish.

Meanwhile, in GTCup, the Porsche GT3 Cup entered by Team NZ outclassed its rivals, taking both wins despite being driven by two bronze-rated drivers, Graeme Dowsett and John Curran, and starting from the back of the field in the second race.

Finnish outfit PS Racing’s Ligier JS53 was the only CN car entered and it came fourth overall in Race 1. Unfortunately, it had to pull out of Race 2 when it ran into gearbox issues.

The Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup will return to Sepang for the third and final round from 2-4 September.
