A limited series of Ford GT pays tribute to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans victory

In 2017, Ford will release a limited series - called the ’66 Heritage Edition - of this year's winning Ford GT in LM GTE Pro at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the colours of the Ford GT40 Mark II that clinched the marque's first victory at the 24 Hours in 1966.

Though the motorization will be identical to the classic road model, the appearance of the new Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition, sporting the #2 of the GT40 driven by Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren in 1966, will be unique. Outfitted entirely in black, matte or metallic, the limited edition Ford GT will boast the two legendary silver stripes and will be equipped with 20-inch aluminium wheels.

The interior will not disappoint with carbon fiber seats upholstered in ebony leather and a gold-finish dashboard. Lastly, like the 1966 GT40 which gave the American manufacturer a historic one-two-three at Le Mans, the steering wheel will be leather-wrapped and the seat belts will be blue.

Raj Nair, Executive Vice President of Ford Product Development and Technical Officer: "The celebration of the anniversary of Ford's historic victories at Le Mans has always played a part in the Ford GT's return. The Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition of 2017 brilliantly renders tribute to the car that marked the beginning of the series of Ford wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966."

Indeed, after a difficult burgeoning and multiple retirements, the GT40 Mk II gave Ford four consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1966 and 1969. Fifty years later, on June 19th of this year, Ford found success again at Le Mans, but this time with a class win. The American manufacturer nearly achieved a one-two-three with three of the four cars entered in the top four spots: only second place went to Ferrari, as if a wink to the 1960s.
