A Jaguar hybrid soon ?

Following Porsche and Ferrari, Jaguar may soon be introducing its hybrid model developed in partnership with Lotus.

An electric car where a conventional engine is used to charge the batteries is an innovative design as used in the Chevrolet Volt which will be launched soon. This solution allows adequate range and low fuel consumption.

Based on this idea, the Lotus engineers have developed a novel 3-cylinder unit, specially designed to serve as generator. Unlike the Opel Astra engine used on the Volt, the power of Lotus cannot be used directly in the power-train, (it lacks sufficient power and torque), but it works excellently as a generator. Compact and lightweight, it is designed to run at 3500 rpm, and produce 47 horsepower.

The first car to use this engine could be Jaguar's prototype XJ.
