On the 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has selected thirty historic cars grouped into three per decade, all up for public vote by race fans. To participate, click HERE and choose one per decade. The vote is open until the 15th of January 2013. Each of the thirty cars will have a short introduction here. Today it is the Audi R18 e-tron quattro that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012. Today it is the Ferrari 166 MM, that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949.
This year marked the revival of the 24 hours after a decade of interruption due to World War II, and also the birth of Ferrari, who won at their first attempt in La Sarthe with the MM 166. Even today, it remains one of the most beautiful Ferrari ever built. After (brilliantly) representing Alfa Romeo competing in the 30's, Enzo Ferrari became a manufacturer under its own name in 1947. This first success in La Sarthe, barely two years after the birth of the Prancing Horse marque, was followed by eight more, up to 1965. During this period, Ferrari contributed greatly to the legend of Le Mans, and vice versa.
