The McLaren F1 GTR is one of the 24 Hours of Le Mans’ iconic cars. In 1995, it won the race with Yannick Dalmas, JJ Lehto and Masanori Sekiya at the wheel. Justin Bell knows the car well as he drove the #51 McLaren F1 GTR entered by Harrods Mach One Racing the same year. His co-drivers were his father and another former winner, Andy Wallace, who had triumphed in a Jaguar XJR 9 in 1988. The three men crossed the finish line in third place, behind the winning #59 McLaren F1 GTR and the #13 Courage C34 driven by the late Bob Wollek, Eric Hélary and Mario Andretti.
The model that Bell shows us in this video is chassis #17R, fielded by the Bigazzi Team in the 1996 edition of the legendary race with an impressive line-up: Johnny Cecotto, Danny Sullivan and three-time Formula One World Champion Nelson Piquet. Starting the race from 12th spot on the grid, this car in the Fina livery (#39) took the chequered flag in eighth place.
Bell tells us what he loves about this legendary racer before taking it for a spin. Enjoy watching the clip just as much as he enjoyed making it!
