24 Hours of Le Mans – Cockpit confidential (7): Sunrise
Sunrise is always a unique moment at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as the drivers begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, even though they have a long way to go...
Driver thoughts on the sunrise at the race:
André Lotterer (Rebellion Racing, #1 R13, LMP1):"It's what we call the 'happy hour' of the race. The track and grip are better, the air is still cool, visibility is improving and you can do your fastest laps."
"[It's at sunrise] that drivers and teams make quite a few mistakes as a result of fatigue and lack of focus."
T.Gommendy
Tristan Gommendy (Graff Racing, #39 ORECA 07-Gibson, LMP2): "It's a very special moment every driver waits for. You know you're passed mid-race. When the day starts to dawn, around 5:00, the atmosphere is extraordinary with lovely pink skies. Also, there's a sort of mist that begins to form and you realize the circuit is still sleeping, so you feel alone. It's an important moment because the next three or four hours, until about 9:00 are crucial. It's during those laps that drivers and teams make quite a few mistakes as a result of fatigue and lack of focus. You're happy to be in the race still, but under pressure because a lot can start to happen."

Andy Priaulx (Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK, #67 Ford GT, LMGTE Pro):"It's a real privilege to be at the wheel during the sunrise! Drivers usually call it the 'happy hour' because it's truly a wonderful experience. You never forget it, the light is simply beautiful."
Cooper MacNeil (JMW Motorsport, #84 Ferrari 488 GTE, LMGTE Am):"It's always nice to witness the sunrise on the track. It means you've made it through the night. But it's also the most difficult time in the race, especially here at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as certain parts of the circuit are still pitch black. You feel added motivation and a certain boost to make it to the checkered flag!"
